Moving with a pet: what to check before booking

Connect documents, dates and bookings in one plan, with an EU preparation timeline and the questions to resolve before paying.

For dog and cat owners planning an international move. The regulatory timing example covers entry into the EU from non-EU countries; other destinations need their own requirements check.

What needs to be ready before the ticket

A convenient flight is of little use if your pet cannot travel on that date. Establish two things first: when the documents can be ready, and who will confirm the animal on every leg. Then choose bookings with change terms that fit the remaining uncertainty.

Start with your pet’s records: veterinary passport, microchip details, vaccination entries and any existing test results. Photograph complete pages so the vet can see dates, signatures and identification numbers. Your working checklist only needs to record what exists and what requires checking. You do not need to send copies of the owner’s identity documents to everyone providing a transport estimate.

Separate responsibilities at the outset. The veterinarian checks health preparation and records. The competent authority determines applicable requirements and document procedures. The transport operator confirms space and travel conditions. Approval from one party does not answer the others’ questions.

Map every leg, including the transfer to your new home

Write down the journey from the old address to the new one. Add the date, country, transport and actual operator for each leg. For a connection, note whether you collect baggage, change airports or leave the transit area. Include those details when asking someone to check the route.

Consider a planning example: a flight to city A, an overnight stay, then a car to city B. That requires three separate confirmations. The hotel must accept your particular pets; the driver must accommodate passengers, carriers and belongings; the airline must accept the animal on that flight. These are deliberately unnamed cities: the example demonstrates a checking method, not an available MIRNO service.

EU preparation: why the timetable may run into months

Your Europe specifies a wait of at least 21 days after primary rabies vaccination. Microchipping must come first; a late booster can restart the waiting requirement. Have the vaccination sequence checked by your vet.

Where antibody testing is required, the applicable rules place blood sampling at least 30 days after primary vaccination and at least 90 days before issue of the accompanying health certificate. Country and animal-history exceptions matter: testing is not required for every EU entry.

Build a calendar with your vet: existing records → necessary procedures → laboratory result → eligible document date → journey. Buying an urgent ticket cannot shorten that sequence. Appointment availability and receiving the result add practical time; they do not replace the required intervals.

If identification, continuous vaccination and a suitable test result already exist, preparation begins by checking them. Someone else’s account of getting ready in a week says little about your schedule. Their pet may have completed the necessary stages long before the move was planned.

1 October 2026Primary vaccination completedAssume the chip is already in place and the vet has checked age and protocol.
22 October 202621 days have elapsedThis interval alone does not complete preparation when testing is needed.
31 October 2026Blood sample collectedIn this example, 30 days have elapsed since primary vaccination.
29 January 202790 days since blood samplingThe calculated earliest certificate date, subject to a satisfactory result and all other requirements.

The veterinary passport, certificate and entry date have different roles

For standard entry from a non-EU country, the European Commission describes a health certificate valid for 10 days between issue and entry checks, subject to exceptions. The document model and issuing authority matter. Its guidance also explains transitional arrangements for older certificates in 2026.

First establish which document your journey requires and where to obtain it, then reserve the appointment. Do not schedule the final visit too early simply because the clinic has space. On a road journey, reaching the relevant entry point may be several days after leaving home.

Before leaving the issuing office, check the microchip number, animal details, route and dates with the specialist. Resolve discrepancies there. Do not alter official records yourself or assume an error will be overlooked. Save the office’s contact details: if the operator changes departure, you may need the document checked again.

Get confirmation for your pet on your journey

Air Serbia requires advance confirmation of pet transport, including from other operators on the ticket.

Make the request specific: date, flight, animal species, weight including the carrier and its external dimensions. A general statement that pets are accepted does not establish availability on a particular day. Ask when the request is processed and what happens to the passenger booking if the pet cannot be accepted.

For a connection, establish the handover procedure: who takes the animal, where you collect them and whether another check-in is needed. Ask what changes if the aircraft or operating airline changes. Keep the case reference and confirmation in your travel folder. If the answer was only verbal, ask for the agreed details in writing.

When the owner and pet travel on different days

Your Europe explains that travel with an authorised accompanying person requires the owner’s journey to fall within five days before or after the pet’s journey, with written permission. If those conditions are unmet, a different entry procedure applies.

Resolve this early if the family has already moved and the pet remains with a sitter. Give the specialist the actual dates of both journeys, who accompanies the pet and whether ownership changes. The word “delivery” in a transport offer does not determine the legal category.

Before signing, ask which procedure covers your circumstances, who prepares the documents and who receives the pet. An assurance that the provider always does it this way needs a more useful answer: the applicable requirement and written responsibilities. Discovering a missing answer before the handover leaves you time to change the arrangements.

Plan the overnight stop and first evening

The move continues after the main flight or drive. You still have luggage, a transfer and somewhere to check in. Confirm the number, species and size of pets with the hotel, together with extra charges, late arrival and room conditions. A pet-friendly search filter helps find options; a direct message establishes whether your particular stay is acceptable.

Separate items needed in transit from those needed after arrival. Keep documents, familiar food, water, a bowl, pads or litter supplies accessible. Discuss the travel kit and feeding arrangements with the vet in light of the journey length. Another traveller’s medication and dosage are not instructions for your animal.

Ask the driver to describe the meeting point for someone who has never visited that airport. Who waits if you are delayed? Who should you message after leaving arrivals? Where do you meet if you have no connection? Specific arrangements make arrival easier to manage.

Use guides without inheriting an outdated checklist

The “Увожу кроликов” guide provides a useful map of preparation, from destination and identification to transport and paperwork. Follow the relevant topic to the original source for your route, and record when you checked it.

Keep a separate note of unresolved questions: whether an existing test result applies, who issues the certificate or whether you leave the transit area. Each question needs a recipient and a recorded response. Where two sources conflict, include both links in a request to the competent authority. Choosing whichever version is easier to satisfy leaves the issue unresolved.

Before paying, review the list below. Give every unconfirmed item a next action and a deadline. This makes the booking decision concrete: either the necessary answers exist, or you know which issue must be settled before committing to a non-refundable purchase.

  • Documents checked for departure, transit and entry.
  • Preparation calendar agreed and critical dates recorded.
  • Each operator has the pet details and has confirmed conditions.
  • Cancellation, date changes and additional costs are understood.
  • Accommodation and transfers cover all passengers, animals and belongings.
  • Operator contacts and a delay plan are available.
